Workplace Performance and Depression

When someone suffers from clinical depression, it can affect numerous aspects of their daily life. They not only struggle with relationships and their physical health, they might also have problems performing well at work. The symptoms of their depression can make it hard to succeed and be as productive as they normally would if they were feeling their best.

Many of the regular symptoms of depression can cause problems with focusing on tasks, being able to socialize with employers and coworkers and for some it may even be too difficult to show up to work for their regular hours. Depression can make people feel tired, unfocused and unmotivated in a way that makes it impossible for them to perform well in the workplace. They could end up having issues with their boss or even lose their jobs because their depression has interfered with their productivity.

Work performance issues due to depression can include inability to concentrate, needing to repeat a job because they performed it incorrectly, working more slowly than usual, being unable to meet deadlines or accomplishing very little because they aren’t feeling well. They may also be tired or lethargic because of lack of sleep or changes in their physical health due to depression. Studies have shown that 77 percent of people with depression reported some lost performance time at work because of their symptoms.

If depression has caused issues at work or has even led to you losing your job then it is a good idea to get a diagnosis and get help. Serious depression issues can be treated through the use of medication and psychotherapy to alleviate symptoms. Getting help for depression can make it easier to function better, feel more comfortable in your productivity at work and ultimately continue to succeed in your career.
